A

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)

A modern, evidence-based psychological approach that helps you stop battling your own thoughts and instead focus on what truly matters to you. At Newpath, ACT is integrated with clinical hypnotherapy to deepen and accelerate lasting change, particularly for anxiety, depression, and chronic stress.

Anchoring

An NLP technique where a specific touch, word, or mental image is linked to a positive emotional state. Once the anchor is established, it can be triggered instantly in everyday situations to access calm, confidence, or focus, making it a powerful tool used in hypnotherapy sessions at Newpath.

Anxiety

A natural stress response that becomes a problem when it fires too often or too intensely. At Newpath, anxiety is treated not as a character flaw but as a learned pattern, one the mind can absolutely unlearn.

B

Bandler, Richard

Co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Richard Bandler developed NLP in the 1970s alongside linguist John Grinder by studying the patterns behind exceptionally effective therapists, including Milton Erickson and Fritz Perls. His work revealed the specific mental and language structures that drive rapid, lasting change. NLP techniques developed by Bandler remain central to the Newpath approach.

C

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

One of the most extensively researched forms of therapy, CBT examines the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. At Newpath, CBT principles are woven into sessions to help clients identify and shift unhelpful thinking patterns at both a conscious and subconscious level, making it particularly effective when combined with clinical hypnotherapy.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

A structured, evidence-informed therapy that uses hypnosis as its primary tool for creating lasting psychological change. Clinical hypnotherapy is not stage hypnosis. You remain aware and in full control throughout every session. At Newpath in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, clinical hypnotherapy is used to treat anxiety, insomnia, depression, phobias, and a wide range of presenting concerns.

Conscious Mind

The analytical, decision-making part of your mind that filters and judges your experiences. It represents a small fraction of your total mental activity. Most unwanted habits, fears, and emotional reactions originate not here, but in the subconscious and unconscious mind, which is exactly where hypnotherapy works.

D

Depression

A persistent state of low mood, reduced motivation, and disconnection from daily life. Depression often has deep roots in core beliefs about self-worth, the future, and personal identity. Hypnotherapy for depression works by addressing these patterns at a subconscious level, complementing other evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT, and schema therapy.

Dissociation

A mental process where a person feels detached from their thoughts, feelings, or surroundings. In a clinical context, a carefully guided form of dissociation can be used therapeutically to help clients review difficult memories or experiences from a safe psychological distance.

E

Ego State Therapy

A therapeutic approach based on the understanding that the mind is made up of different internal "parts," each carrying its own history, needs, and responses. Conflict between these parts often drives anxiety, self-sabotage, and emotional distress. Resolving that internal conflict is where some of the deepest therapeutic change takes place.

Erickson, Milton H.

Widely regarded as the father of modern clinical hypnotherapy, Milton H. Erickson was an American psychiatrist whose revolutionary work transformed the therapeutic use of hypnosis. He developed a conversational, indirect approach that worked with each person's unique inner world, using metaphor, storytelling, and gentle suggestion rather than authoritarian commands. His influence underpins much of the way hypnotherapy is practised at Newpath.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

A conversational, indirect style of hypnotherapy developed by Milton H. Erickson. Rather than issuing direct commands, Ericksonian hypnosis works through metaphor, narrative, and carefully crafted suggestion. It is particularly effective for analytical, sceptical, or resistant clients, and forms a core part of the clinical approach at Newpath.

H

Hypnosis

A natural state of deeply focused attention and inner absorption, most people describe it as profoundly relaxing. In this state, the subconscious mind becomes far more receptive to positive change. Hypnosis is not sleep, and you are never unconscious or out of control. It is a skill the brain already knows how to do, used therapeutically in every hypnotherapy session.

Hypnotherapy for Anxiety

One of the most common and well-supported applications of clinical hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy for anxiety works by accessing the subconscious patterns that keep the nervous system in a state of threat response, then gently rewiring those responses at their root. At Newpath in Sydney, anxiety treatment combines hypnotherapy with NLP, CBT, and ACT for comprehensive, lasting results.

Hypnotherapy for Depression

Clinical hypnotherapy for depression targets the subconscious beliefs and emotional patterns that sustain low mood, helping clients access inner resources they may have lost touch with. It is used at Newpath alongside evidence-based approaches including ACT and schema therapy.

Hypnotherapy for Insomnia

Hypnotherapy for sleep disorders and insomnia works directly with the overactive mental patterns that prevent the nervous system from winding down at night. Rather than managing sleep symptoms, hypnotherapy addresses the underlying anxiety, rumination, or hypervigilance at their source, helping the body relearn how to rest naturally.

Hypnotherapy for Phobias

Phobias are learned fear responses, which means they can be unlearned. Hypnotherapy for phobias is one of the fastest and most effective treatment approaches available, often producing significant results in far fewer sessions than clients expect.

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss

Hypnotherapy for weight loss addresses the subconscious drivers of emotional eating, self-sabotage, and unhelpful relationships with food, rather than relying on willpower alone. At Newpath, this is approached with genuine clinical depth, not quick-fix scripts.

Hypnotherapist

A trained professional who uses hypnosis as a therapeutic tool to facilitate meaningful and lasting change. A clinical hypnotherapist combines knowledge of psychology, neuroscience, and evidence-based therapeutic models with skilled hypnotic technique. Sandra Moscardo at Newpath is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner with additional training in schema therapy, ACT, and CBT, and was awarded Best Hypnotherapist 2026 in the Sutherland Shire.

I

Ideomotor Response

Subtle, involuntary muscle movements that can occur during hypnosis, often used by a clinical hypnotherapist to communicate with the subconscious mind without requiring verbal responses from the client.

Insomnia

A persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early, often driven by an overactive, anxious mind. Hypnotherapy is highly effective for insomnia because it works directly with the subconscious patterns that keep the nervous system in a state of alertness when it should be winding down.

N

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)

A set of practical techniques that explore the relationship between thinking patterns, language, and behaviour. NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s and is used at Newpath to rapidly shift limiting beliefs, reframe unhelpful responses, and create more empowering internal states. NLP therapy is often combined with clinical hypnotherapy for accelerated results.

P

Parts Work

A therapeutic technique that works with the different sub-personalities or internal "parts" of the mind, each with its own perspective and intention. When parts are in conflict, the result is often anxiety, self-sabotage, or emotional paralysis. Resolving that conflict through hypnotherapy and ego state work is where lasting transformation begins.

Phobia

An intense, irrational fear response to a specific object, situation, or experience. Phobias are learned responses, which means they can be unlearned, often in far fewer sessions than people expect.

See: Hypnotherapy for Phobias

Post-Hypnotic Suggestion

A suggestion delivered during hypnosis that is designed to activate automatically in everyday life after the session ends. Post-hypnotic suggestions are used to anchor new behaviours, emotional responses, and thought patterns so that change continues to build between sessions.

Psychology

The scientific study of the mind, behaviour, and human experience. A solid grounding in psychology underpins all clinical work at Newpath, ensuring hypnotherapy is applied within a responsible, evidence-informed framework. Sandra Moscardo integrates psychological principles from CBT, ACT, schema therapy, and NLP into every treatment plan.

Psychotherapist

A trained mental health professional who helps clients work through emotional, psychological, and behavioural difficulties using structured therapeutic approaches. A clinical hypnotherapist shares many of the same goals as a psychotherapist but specifically incorporates hypnosis as a core tool, which can allow deeper and faster access to the subconscious patterns driving a client's experience.

R

Regression Therapy

A therapeutic technique that gently guides a client back to earlier experiences, sometimes from childhood, to identify and resolve the original source of a current issue. Regression therapy at Newpath is always conducted with full clinical support and within a safe, structured framework.

Reframing

The process of shifting the way an experience or situation is interpreted, so that new meaning and new choices become available. Reframing is not denial. It is one of the most powerful tools in both NLP and hypnotherapy because it works with the meaning the mind assigns to events, not just the events themselves.

S

Schema Therapy

An integrative approach that identifies deep-rooted patterns, called schemas, formed in early life that continue to drive emotional reactions and relationship dynamics in adulthood. When combined with clinical hypnotherapy, schema work can create change at a very fundamental level of the personality.

Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy for smoking cessation is one of the most researched and well-supported applications of clinical hypnotherapy. It works by addressing the subconscious associations, emotional triggers, and identity patterns connected to smoking, rather than relying on willpower or nicotine replacement alone.

Subconscious Mind

The vast, largely automatic part of your mind that stores memories, habits, emotional responses, and core beliefs. The majority of daily behaviour originates in the subconscious, which is why lasting change so often requires working at this level rather than through conscious effort or willpower alone.

Submodalities

In NLP, the finer qualities of a mental image or internal representation, such as its brightness, size, distance, colour, or sound. Adjusting submodalities can dramatically reduce the emotional intensity of a difficult memory or belief, often very quickly.

Suggestion

A carefully worded idea or instruction offered to the subconscious mind during hypnosis. Effective therapeutic suggestions are positive, specific, and tailored to the individual. Generic scripts are not used at Newpath; every suggestion is crafted to suit the person in the room.

T

Therapeutic Alliance

The quality of the relationship between therapist and client. Research consistently identifies this as one of the strongest predictors of successful outcomes across all forms of therapy. At Newpath, building genuine trust and rapport is treated as a clinical priority from the very first session.

Trance

A naturally occurring state of focused inner attention that most people enter multiple times each day, while driving a familiar route, reading, or daydreaming. In a clinical hypnotherapy session, trance is deepened and directed purposefully to support therapeutic goals.

U

Unconscious Mind

The deepest layer of mental activity, where core beliefs, formative memories, and automatic survival responses are stored. The unconscious mind holds the foundational imprints that shape how we see ourselves and the world. Clinical hypnotherapy creates a bridge to this level, where the most profound and enduring change becomes possible.

Unconscious Process

Any mental activity that occurs below the level of conscious awareness, including breathing, habitual reactions, emotional responses, and deeply held beliefs. Because so much of human behaviour is driven by unconscious processes, hypnotherapy can reach and shift patterns that conscious effort alone often cannot.
